Steel retaining walls
Steel retaining walls have a slim profile, so you keep more usable yard.
They suit tight sites and sites where a thick wall would take too much space.
Steel walls use steel posts and sheet or panel infill. Because they are thin, they do not eat into your yard the way a block or rock wall can, which matters on small blocks.
They are strong for their size and quick to install. As with any wall holding up a lot of soil, the design depends on the height, the soil and what is above it.
Watch it go together.
- Cut the slopeThe excavator cuts the bank back to make room for the wall and drainage.
- Footings and postsPost holes are dug and steel or timber posts are set in concrete.
- Build it upSteel panels go in between the posts for a slim, strong wall.
- Drainage behindGravel and a slotted pipe go in behind the wall so water can escape.
- Backfill and finishThe wall is backfilled and levelled, ready for a fence on top if you want one.

Height and engineering
Taller steel walls and walls holding up a driveway, building or neighbouring land usually need engineering and approval. Tell us early.
Finish
Coatings and colours decide how a steel wall looks and how it handles the weather. Ask what we recommend.
Drainage
Steel walls still need drainage behind them to release water.
Why choose steel over concrete?
Steel is slimmer, so you keep more yard, and it can go in quickly. Concrete suits the heaviest loads.
Can steel walls look good?
Yes. They have clean, modern lines and can be coated in a colour that suits the house.
Does a steel wall need drainage?
Yes. All retaining walls need drainage so water does not build up behind them.
