Sandstone retaining walls
Sandstone walls bring warm, natural colour to a garden.
Large sandstone blocks hold a slope and double as seating, steps and garden edges.
Sandstone is cut into large blocks that are stacked to form the wall. The weight of each block does much of the work, which is why sandstone walls are usually placed with machinery.
Its honey and cream tones suit pool surrounds, front gardens and terraces. We plan the layout, the drainage and how the blocks step down the slope.
Watch it go together.
- Cut the slopeThe excavator cuts the bank back to make room for the wall and drainage.
- A solid baseA level, compacted base goes in under the first course.
- Build it upBig sandstone blocks are placed by machine, each course stepped back slightly.
- Drainage behindGravel and a slotted pipe go in behind the wall so water can escape.
- Backfill and finishThe wall is backfilled, levels tidied and turf goes back.
